Microsoft previews Game Assist in-game browser in Edge Stable
Microsoft has announced that Game Assist, its recently unveiled in-game browser, is now also available in preview for Microsoft Edge Stable users.
Game Assist is a special version of Edge optimized for PC gaming that will appear on top of your game in Game Bar as a "game-aware" overlay when hitting the Win+G keyboard shortcut.
According to William Devereux, a senior product manager in the Microsoft Edge team, it is designed to suggest tips and guides for a list of supported games and shares the same browser data.
"With the release of Edge Stable 132, Game Assist is available without any Insider software or needing to change your default browser, making it even easier to use on your gaming PC," Devereux said.
"To opt-into Game Assist (Preview), open Edge, go to Settings and more ("…") > Settings, search for Game Assist in the search box, find the Game Assist option, and select Install widget."
While the first preview version introduced in November required using Microsoft Edge's Beta or Preview channel as the default web browser, the version rolled out today will use Edge Stable by default. However, for the latest updates, you can also set it to use Edge Beta, Dev, or Canary instead.
You can get a quick overview of Game Assist in action in the video embedded below:
In addition to Baldur's Gate 3, Diablo IV, Fortnite, Hellblade II: Senua's Saga, League of Legends, Minecraft, Overwatch 2, Roblox, and Valorant, which were introduced in November, Game Assist now offers guides and contextual tips for even more games, including Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Marvel Rivals, Metaphor: ReFantazio, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. II: Heart of Chernobyl.
Until Microsoft adds content for more popular games, you can also use Game Assist to find guides and other websites with game tips while playing any game.
"We've also made a number of improvements to the browser experience and added support for some extensions like ad blockers," Devereux added.
"We're currently working on the next wave of updates, including support for keyboard shortcuts, a Settings and more (…) menu with common browser controls (including the ability to add the current tab as an app on the sidebar), right-click context menus, an improved picture-in-picture experience, and more."
Microsoft is also asking users to provide feedback via Game Assist's "Send feedback" dialog (available in the "Settings and more" menu), the Game Assist Community feedback portal, r/MicrosoftEdge, and other social media channels.
