Microsoft lifts Windows 11 24H2 block on PCs with USB scanners
Microsoft has lifted a compatibility block preventing Windows 11 24H2 upgrades after fixing a bug causing USB connection issues to some scanners.
The company confirmed the issue two weeks ago following widespread user reports that started coming in on Reddit, Microsoft's own community website, and other online platforms, saying the connection problems are caused by affected devices not switching from eSCL to USB mode, which allows the scanner drivers to be matched.
To ensure this known issue doesn't impact more customers who upgrade to Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft added a safeguard hold and advised users not to manually update using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or the Media Creation Tool until the issue is fixed.
According to Redmond, the list of affected devices includes standalone scanners and other devices featuring support for the eSCL (eScanner Communication Language) driverless scanning protocol, such as multi-function printers, fax machines, modems, and other eSCL network devices.
On Tuesday, it resolved the known issue with the KB5048667 cumulative update released during this Patch Tuesday for all Windows 11, version 24H2 editions.
"We recommend you install the latest security update for your device as it contains important improvements and issue resolutions, including this one," the company said in an update to the Windows release health dashboard.
"The safeguard hold (ID 54762729) that was previously in place for this issue will be lifted in the coming days."
Microsoft also noted that customers might have to wait up to 48 hours after installing KB5048667 before being offered the Windows 11, version 24H2 update. However, those who want to speed up this process can restart their devices to expedite the upgrade.
The company also recently added a Windows 11 24H2 safeguard hold on devices with incompatible Intel Smart Sound Technology (SST) audio drivers because they're triggering blue screen of death (BSOD) issues.
Additionally, it announced over the weekend that upgrades are blocked on systems with outdated Google Workspace Sync installs, causing Outlook launch issues and "Cannot Start Microsoft Outlook" errors.
